__________
There was hardly anyone else at Loring Park that day, but it was quite beautiful, with a handsome footbridge that spanned a pond stocked with Koi fish, and verdant willow trees with branches sipping at the water’s edge and sheltering resting ducks and geese preparing for their flight south.
Sarah and Kirstin sat on a cold bench beside the pond smoking cigarettes and trying not to shiver. They were cold and slightly nauseous from the cigarettes, but they were enjoying themselves immensely.
“Let’s just say he’s not going to fuck with me again,” said Kirstin trying to let the smoke drift from her mouth nonchalantly.
“Who does he think he is?” said Sarah.
“Seriously.”
“Your parents pay good money for that school.”
“I know. And he’s all, ‘I won’t tolerate you wandering into class late so often, Kirstin.’”
Kirstin stomped out her cigarette and began rummaging through her massive purse for a piece of gum. A squirrel scurried down a tree toward the bench, and two others who had been impatiently monitoring Sarah and Kirstin, moved in closer. Kirstin found her piece of gum, folded it into her mouth and continued, “You’ll tolerate whatever I tell you to tolerate, bitch.”
“No doubt,” Sarah agreed. “He works for you, not the other way around.”
“Thank you.”
Sarah and Kirstin bumped fists. Sarah flicked her cigarette away, and several squirrels rushed to investigate the butt. Quickly disappointed, they moved in closer as Sarah pulled from her turquoise clutch a small bag of miniature, caramel-covered rice cakes. The squirrels—nearly a dozen now—began to gather. When Sarah popped open the foil bag, two squirrels hopped up on the bench startling the girls.
“Oh my God,” they said together. Foolishly, Sarah, already with a rice cake in her hand, threw it at one of the squirrels, but the animal snatched it in his mouth and fended off several competitors before retreating. Many more squirrels advanced to the girls’ feet. Sarah and Kirstin began to panic.
“Oh my God!”
“Seriously!”
Sarah threw another rice cake down by the water in an attempt to make the squirrels chase it. Several did go after it, but more squirrels came in from across the park.
Kirstin giggled. “This is freaking me out.”
“I know.”
As Sarah put her hand in the snack bag again, a squirrel jumped on Kirstin’s shoulder, causing her to scream and jump in the air, her hair whipping about wildly. Most of the squirrels dashed off to the periphery, but not all. Kirstin’s scream also had the effect of startling Sarah who jerked the bag of rice cakes, spilling them all over the bench and ground. The squirrels swarmed, and several geese waddled over as well. Sarah and Kirstin ran away screaming.
